How India's grand old party was left with bank accounts frozen

At a hurriedly convened press conference on February 16, Congress treasurer Ajay Maken said the tax department had frozen the party's main bank accounts on the "flimsy" ground of delay in filing returns years ago..

A few days later, Congress alleged that the income tax department has "withdrawn" a sum of Rs 65 crore from its accounts in different banks "undemocratically" even when the case pertaining to their return for previous years is sub judice...

Party treasurer Ajay Maken said even when the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT), which the Congress had moved against the tax department's claim of Rs 210 crore as recovery against alleged tax liabilities and penalties in previous tax returns has been stayed and a lien has been marked, the tax authorities have resorted to "undemocratic action" by taking out the amount from their accounts...

While arguing before the Delhi bench of ITAT against Congresss petition seeking stay on proceedings against the party, the tax departments senior standing counsel had said the action by tax authorities did not cause any hardship to the party as it had disclosed a corpus of Rs 657 crore and cash and cash equivalent of Rs 388 crore at the end of March 2023...
