Urban unemployment rate declined to its lowest level in over four years to 6.5% in Q3FY24, according to the latest quarterly Periodic Labour Force Survey data released earlier this week..

The periodic labour force survey was launched in April 2017 by the National Sample Survey Office of the ministry of statistics and programme implementation to replace the annual employment and unemployment survey, based on the recommendations of the task force on employment, headed by the then vice-chairman of NITI Aayog Arvind Panagariya...

The survey compiles data from nearly 45,000 households comprising around 170,000 individuals from urban areas for each quarter, estimating employment and unemployment indicators...

Besides unemployment figures, PLFS also tracks labour force participation, worker population ratio and distribution of workers in broad employment categories and according to industry of work across age groups in 22 states and UTs...

For the quarterly survey, the estimates are calculated based on the current weekly status, which measures the number of persons either employed or unemployed on an average in a week of seven days preceding the date of the survey...

The government in India relies on a survey called the Periodic Labour Force Survey to calculate the unemployment rate or the ratio of persons unemployed in the labour force. The labour force is determined based on the participation rate or number of people aged 15 years and above willing to work or already working in the country. The exercise is conducted for both urban and rural areas.

The unemployment rate was 6.0% for men and 9.2% for women. It was 6.5% and 9.6% for men and women respectively, in October– December 2022.According to the PLFS report, female labour force participation in Q4 FY23 increased marginally to 22.7% from 22.3% in the previous quarter. The male abour force participation stands at 73.5%.
