Mobile phone users are unlikely to get a respite from the menace of pesky commercial calls and text messages anytime soon as the majority of these come from unregistered telemarketers (UTMs) using personal mobile numbers that are almost impossible to monitor or bar, say senior telco executives...

Further, telcos say they could end up flouting customer privacy norms if they tried monitoring the calling patterns of individual users who had legally acquired personal mobile connections and were entitled to telecom services...

Senior industry executives said a possible solution to the pesky calls problem is for either the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) or the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) coming out with a uniform caller ID verification app akin to the Truecaller platform..

Another senior industry executive said putting the onus on telcos to track down UTMs won't work as most of these unauthorised telemarketers operate privately on behalf of real estate, financial services or branding companies and buy personal mobile connections in bulk to make commercial calls..
