NEW DELHI: Using the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR), mobile phone users managed to block 541,428 mobile phones and trace 255,882 lost devices in less than a month since its launch, as per data shared on the Sancharsaathi portal...

CEIR is an artificial intelligence (AI)-based portal launched on May 16 by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to check authenticity of a mobile connection and for blocking lost or stolen phones...

As per estimates, the lost or stolen phone market is worth around Rs 1,200 crore with over 50,000 devices being lost or stolen in a month..

He said going forward, it would be much easier for people to trace their lost mobiles as there wont be any resale value of the device in case the original user has blocked the IMEI...

Last month, telecom minister Ashwini Vaishnaw launched the Sancharsaathi portal that helps in tracking lost or stolen mobile phones, checking fraudulent connections, etc..
