The government has projected a record wheat production of 112.18 million tonnes in the 2023-24 crop year (July-June), as per the second estimate of the agriculture ministry.

The country's wheat production is estimated to set a new record of 112.74 million tonne in the 2022-23 crop year (July-June), while the overall foodgrain output is also likely to be a record 330.53 million tonne, the Agriculture Ministry said on Thursday.

India's wheat production is likely to reach a record 112.2 million tonnes in the current year despite recent weather-related losses of 1-2 million tonnes, according to the country's government. The government's effort to procure wheat at minimum support price has already reached 7 lakh tonnes, compared to 2 lakh tonnes in the same period a year ago. Farmers have been encouraged to sell to roller flour millers directly instead of to state-owned FCI under the Open Market Sale Scheme. The government is also considering requests for relaxed procurement norms from Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana, where quality losses have occurred due to recent rains.

The Centre on Monday said about 8-10 per cent of the wheat crop is estimated to have been damaged due to recent untimely rains and hailstorms in key producing states, but better yield prospects in late-sown areas are expected to make up for the production loss.

We will not allow exports of wheat, said Subodh K Singh, additional secretary, department of food, adding that the country is not a primary wheat exporter and has exported wheat only when there's been a surplus. The Centre's procurement of wheat, crucial for keeping its wholesale rates under control, is much below the target of 34 million tonnes despite prices continuing to increase.
