Focus of rain-battered North India shifts to relief, rescue

As rain ebbed in some parts of north India and continued in others, governments of J&K, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan stepped up relief and rescue operations..

The Indian Meteorological Department has warned that Shimla, Sirmaur and Kinnaur districts of Himachal may experience moderate-to-high flash floods in the next few days..

According to state authorities, 31 people have been killed in three days in landslides and floods, which blocked nearly 1,300 roads and damaged 40 major bridges..

All the stranded people would be evacuated to safe places by Tuesday night, officials said.. Several fatalities were reported from the states on Tuesday as well - 4 from Uttarakhand and 3 from UP, Rajasthan and Punjab...

In Uttarakhand, four pilgrims from MP died and seven more were injured when a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall buried three vehicles near the Gangnani bridge on the Gangotri National Highway in Uttarkashi district on Monday night..
