Jio cements rural dominance in July; JioBharat likely adding to growth, analysts say

Latest subscriber data collated by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) showed Jio added 2 million mobile users in the rural markets in July while both Airtel and Vi lost 540,000 and 690,000 rural users respectively...

In July, Jio's parent, Reliance Industries (RIL) had launched Jio Bharat, an internet-enabled feature phone, costing 999 in a bid to attract more of the estimated 250 million entry-level mobile broadband customers, especially in the rural markets where competition is set to intensify with rival Airtel also eyeing this market...

Analysts, though, expect both Jio and Airtel to corner 8% and 5% additional market share gains respectively in the premium mobile broadband users' segment in the coming months, on the back of their rapid pan-India 5G rollouts and loss-making Vi's continuing cash constraints...

Reliance Jio emerged as the sole telco to gain active mobile users in August 2023, while Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) experienced declines, as per telecom regulator data. Analysts noted Jio's success in attracting older rivals' 2G users through the popular Jio Bharat feature phone amidst rising demand. Jio expanded its active user base to 417 million with an addition of 1.2 million users, while Airtel and Vi dwindled to 376 million and 199 million, respectively, shedding 0.4 million and 2.9 million active users each.

Airtel beats Jio in race for postpaid users in Q1

Airtel added 0.8 million postpaid users in the June quarter. While Jio does not disclose its postpaid subscriber base, it has said that a bulk of new Jio Fiber (Jio fibre-to-the-home business) users were on postpaid plans. As per the sector regulator's May end data, Jio added 0.59 million wired broadband users over April and May to take its total use base to around 9 million.
