OpenAI’s Boardroom Drama Could Mess Up Your Future

Key Points

OpenAI began as a nonprofit research lab whose mission was to develop artificial intelligence on par or beyond human leveltermed artificial general intelligence or AGIin a safe way..

After speaking to someone familiar with the boards thinking, it appears to me that in firing Altman the directors believed they were executing their mission of making sure the company develops powerful AI safelyas was its sole reason for existing..

I cant say whether Altmans conduct truly endangered OpenAIs mission, but I do know this: The board seems to have missed the possibility that a poorly explained execution of a beloved and charismatic leader might harm that mission..

For now, the board is calling the bluff of the massed employees, virtually daring OpenAIs workforce to stream out the door and join Altman at Microsoft..

Microsoft would have no qualms whatsoever about pocketing truly unlimited amounts of returns from future breakthroughs from the ex-OpenAI staffsomething that anyone following Altman over there might like to ponder, in light of their previous time at a company with different founding principles..
