IMD warns of extreme heat in Apr-Jun; Wheat crop unlikely to be impacted

India will experience extreme weather conditions in the form of "above normal heatwave days" during the hot weather season which starts in April and continues through June due to EL Nino conditions, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD)..

"There is no heatwave warning in wheat-producing areas, except Madhya Pradesh, where around 90% of the wheat crop has been harvested," said IMD director general Mrutyunjay Mohapatra on Monday.. The government is expecting a yield of 112 mt of wheat this year against last year's 110 mt as the area under cultivation has gone up by 1.21%.. El Nino conditions are likely to persist during April-June, thereafter shifting towards La Nina (generally associated with good monsoon rainfall in India) during the second half of the monsoon months (July-September), the IMD chief said..
