Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was sentenced to two years in jail by a Surat court in the defamation case over his remark on the ‘Modi’ surname. The Surat court convicted him under Section 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The case is from 2019 when he said "Why do all thieves have Modi in their names, whether it is Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi or Narendra Modi?" during campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections that year in Karnataka. A BJP MLA had filed a criminal defamation case against Rahul Gandhi where he said the Congress leader defamed the entire Modi community with his statement. Rahul Gandhi has been granted bail for 30 days in the case.
