Ltd, says these will be the companies which are likely to see the inclusion in the portfolios of some of the large investors, including mutual funds, including insurance companies..

The niche area in which they are operating currently, could possibly give them a higher amount of weightage into the portfolio because they are a specialised derivative company as far as the crude oil derivative markets and the products are concerned..

We try and keep the maximum investment at 70% level and then balance we try to book profit, shed some amount of weight on that and at the same time invest that money into some of the promising newer companies which are coming up into the portfolio...

Our understanding is that till the first half of 2024, the market is likely to remain extremely strong and if that is a case then there is no point in exiting the portfolio investment completely, particularly when you are convinced about the business and that is where you book some part of the profit in the rising upside or the upside in the market and create a further opportunity for swapping into better quality stocks which are recently getting to the listed market...

The important point and the challenge out here as far as the stock market journey is concerned is an overhang, the dilution of the equity because that is something which is already done and as far as the stock price upside is concerned, every time the stock has to go up, one will look around that if the company will go and dilute the equity new investors, so that is where probably this overhang continues...

In a fortnight where smallcaps were the worst performers and large investors are counting on how much losses their smallcap portfolio have incurred. There are still some die-hard small fans who would be looking to invest in small caps and there is nothing wrong in investing in small caps even in mayhem if one is sure of holding it for the next three to five years. The only thing that needs to be ensured is that one should understand that there is a difference between a good business and a bad business even in the small, mid and largecap segments. There is a difference in the absolute value of the stock and the value of the company. There are some businesses that will remain small but are so niche that they will still make wealth for you if you hold them for some time. But if your definition of smallcap stocks is a stock that is quoting at below Rs 20 or an X amount and the reason you want to buy that stock is because you are hoping your money will grow by ten times, then forget small, mid or large, the stock market is not a place where you will make a return, the only thing you will get is unnecessary anxiety.

Gas stocks have been underperforming the market for quite some time. The argument against them has been multifold, right from stagnation in terms of volume growth, companies not being able to expand in newer areas and the latest one being the threat from EV. Couple of months back, an announcement about pushing the electric vehicle (EV) more aggressively in Delhi, brought pressure on the stocks like IGL. While there is no doubt that over a period of time, EV will dominate, does it mean the end of the business of the gas companies? The answer is probably no, there are many other use cases and narrative about negative impact might be over stretched. Also the street might be ignoring the fact that these companies have enough cash on the balance sheet and also cash flows from existing lines of business to move into new areas which are part of the EV eco system.
