Ghazipur MP Afzal Ansari disqualified from Lok Sabha following four year jail sentence
Afzal Ansari, a parliamentarian from Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, has been disqualified from Lok Sabha after being sentenced to four years in prison in a 2007 criminal case. The judgment was also against his brother, Mukhtar Ansari, who has been sentenced to ten years in prison, and they have been fined Rs 6 lakh ($8,000) by the court. The Ansari brothers were booked under the UP Gangsters Act in 2007, two years after alledgedly orchestrating the murder of former BJP legislator Krishnanand Rai. In 2019, all the accused were acquitted of the murder case as witnesses had turned hostile, but the case under the Gangsters Act remained. Key Points
